Lexus ES Hybrid Inverter Coolant Pump Repair: A P0A80 Case File

Lexus hybrids are built to fail quietly, and when a warning lamp does light up the fault is usually smaller than the message implies. The ticket below began as a yellow warning lamp and a soft accelerator, and it closed with one coolant pump and a refill rather than anything inside the high-voltage battery.

Hybrid cooling parts are now a steady line for any shop that services Toyota and Lexus hybrids, and the component in this ticket is one buyers quote more often as these cars age. A warning-lamp failure on the cooling side is the outcome a shop wants, because the fix is a pump and a bleed rather than a battery module. The fault code and the workshop steps below are kept as recorded.

Case 1 — Lexus ES hybrid warning lamp and power loss (P0A80)

Symptom. A Lexus ES hybrid came in with a yellow warning lamp lit on the instrument panel. On the road the accelerator felt soft, the car was down on power, and the engine ran noticeably louder than normal.

Diagnosis. The technician started with the usual questions about recent water exposure and maintenance history, then parked the car, set the handbrake, and chocked the wheels before touching anything. The diagnostic tool went into the OBD port under the driver side and read P0A80 within a couple of minutes. He read that as a hybrid-system fault and named two likely directions, the inverter coolant circuit or unstable battery voltage, then set out to separate them. With the engine idling and the hood up he listened through a stethoscope, and he checked the inverter housing by hand: it felt warmer than the normal warm-to-the-touch reading. On the lift there was no external leak, and a flashlight pass over the coolant lines showed no damage, which moved the suspicion onto the coolant pump itself.

Fix. The battery negative terminal was disconnected before the electrical work began, a step the technician called standard practice for anything on the high-voltage side. The coolant pump next to the inverter came out, and its impeller was fouled with debris. A new pump went in, and the technician compared the two side by side and pointed out that the replacement was the revised version. The system was refilled with coolant and run for about ten minutes while the level was watched and the air was bled out through the vent valve. The scan tool then read clear of codes, and the lamp stayed off.

Parts notes. The component that closed this ticket is the inverter coolant pump, which sits beside the power control unit and keeps its electronics cool. A hybrid carries more than one cooling circuit, so this pump is a separate part from the engine water pump and from the hybrid battery cooling fan, and each carries its own OE number. In our catalog:

Both pump numbers above cover the ES300h, but they split by build window, so quote against the chassis code rather than the model name alone. A buyer who orders the inverter pump without the chassis code risks landing the wrong-hybrid unit, and the price difference is small next to a returned part across borders.

The hybrid cooling circuit is where this warning actually lived. The impeller had picked up debris, which slowed the coolant through the inverter and pushed the electronics toward an overheat, and the warning was the powertrain’s way of backing off before the temperature climbed further. The repair needed no battery work and no control-unit replacement, only the pump that the checks had already singled out.

What this case teaches parts buyers

  1. Hybrid cooling is its own line. The inverter pump, the engine water pump, and the hybrid battery cooling fan are three separate wear items, and a request for a hybrid water pump still needs the right one identified before quoting.
  2. The code opens the door, the checks close it. P0A80 can point at the battery or at the coolant circuit, and the stethoscope and the hand temperature check were what separated the two here.
  3. Order by chassis code. Hybrid pumps differ by platform, and the ES300h (AXZH10) pump is not interchangeable with the Camry Hybrid unit. Run the OE number check before you quote.
  4. Ask for the revised part. The replacement was the revised version, which matters when a part has a known update. The genuine Toyota parts guide covers how to tell the current revision from an old-stock lookalike.
  5. Finish the refill with a bleed. The shop ran the engine and bled air out through the vent valve before signing off, and air left in the circuit is the common reason a freshly replaced pump still trips the warning.
