Toyota and Lexus Combination Meter Recall: A Gauge Cluster That Fails to Boot

On 18 June 2026 China’s State Administration for Market Regulation published two recall filings covering Toyota and Lexus vehicles whose combination meter can fail to boot when the ignition is switched on. The affected vehicles span one locally built Toyota model and three imported models, and the defect sits in software rather than hardware.

The combination meter is the instrument cluster that carries the speedometer, the tachometer, the warning lamps and the vehicle information readout. Because its control program was set up incorrectly, the meter can fail to start correctly at ignition. When that happens, part of the vehicle information and the warning lamps do not display or light up. A driver who cannot see a warning lamp or a speed reading is driving partly blind, which is why the authority treated it as a safety defect and why the correction is free.

The recall: combination meter control program on Prado, GX500h, UX300h and Crown

Symptom

The failure appears at startup. When the driver turns the ignition on, the combination meter may not initialise correctly, so some vehicle information and warning lamps fail to display or illuminate. The condition is described in the filings as intermittent rather than permanent, which is exactly the kind of fault that can pass a quick test and then surface on the road. The warning lamps on a Toyota or Lexus cluster cover charging, oil pressure, brake and airbag functions among others, so a meter that fails to show them at startup removes the early warning for several critical systems at once. A warning lamp that should be visible during a fault, but is not, defeats the one signal a driver relies on to catch a problem early.

Diagnosis

The root cause is not a burned display or a failed circuit board. The filings describe an incorrectly configured combination meter control program. At startup the meter’s software can fail to start up properly, leaving part of the display dark. Because the cause is software, the diagnosis is the recall itself: the production date range and the control program version identify the affected vehicles, and no mechanical teardown is needed to confirm it.

The recall covers four model lines across two filings. Filing S2026M0068V, filed by FAW Toyota Motor (Chengdu), recalls 9,408 locally built Prado vehicles produced between 16 July 2024 and 27 September 2025. Filing S2026M0069V, filed by Toyota Motor (China) Investment, recalls 2,945 imported Lexus GX500h produced between 28 February and 26 December 2024, 7 imported Lexus UX300h produced between 12 April and 26 July 2024, and 1,328 imported Toyota Crown produced between 20 May 2024 and 21 July 2025. The two filings cover 13,688 vehicles in total, and both take effect on 27 June 2026.

Fix

The remedy is a free software update. A dealer upgrades the combination meter control program, which corrects the startup initialisation so the meter boots and shows the vehicle information and warning lamps normally. No parts are replaced as part of this recall, so the job is short and costs the owner nothing. Owners are notified by registered mail, and the update is applied from 27 June 2026 onward. The filings point owners to the SAMR recall centre website, where a VIN can be checked against the published recall notice.

Parts notes

Because the recall is a software correction, there is no cluster part to order for the recall itself. The relevant hardware, for a cluster that ever needs replacement outside this recall, is the combination meter assembly, which Toyota catalogues as an instrument cluster assembly. The genuine 83800-6AW51 instrument cluster assembly is listed for the Land Cruiser 200 series from 2007 onward, and the 83800-33J51 instrument cluster assembly is listed for the Lexus ES240 and ES350. Neither number covers the new Prado, GX500h, UX300h or Crown named in this recall, so a buyer should confirm the exact cluster for the chassis code before quoting. Both parts sit in the instrument clusters category, and fitment should be checked against the Toyota OE number guide because cluster numbers are keyed to model and generation, not to the brand name.

What these cases teach parts buyers

  • A cluster that will not boot is not always a hardware failure. This recall is a software defect, so the first check is the control program version, not the display or the circuit board.
  • Warning lamps that fail to display are a safety issue, which is why the regulator classified the fault as a recall and why the correction is free.
  • The combination meter is keyed to model and generation. A Land Cruiser cluster and a Lexus ES cluster carry different numbers, and neither covers the newer TNGA-generation Prado or Crown.
  • Buyers quoting a cluster should ask for the chassis code and confirm the number against the genuine parts identification guide before ordering, because instrument clusters come in many regional and generation variants.
  • A software recall creates no parts demand by itself, but it moves discussion toward the cluster assembly for units that later fail outright, so keeping the right cluster numbers mapped to model codes pays off.
