Toyota Backup Camera Recall: Panoramic View Monitor Freeze and the Parking Assist ECU

In late October 2025 Toyota filed a safety recall in Canada covering roughly 99,000 Toyota and Lexus vehicles whose reversing camera feed can drop out, or freeze for a moment after it appears, while the driver is backing up. The defect sits in the software of the Panoramic View Monitor system, and the correction is a free update to its parking assist control unit.

The Panoramic View Monitor is the system that stitches the surround view and feeds the reversing camera to the display, and a parking assist ECU processes those camera feeds. Under certain circumstances the software can hit a logic error, and the reversing image drops out or freezes. A missing camera image while reversing fails a federal safety standard and raises the risk of striking a person behind the vehicle, which is what turned an intermittent display fault into a recall.

The recall: Panoramic View Monitor software across 30 plus Toyota and Lexus models

Symptom

The fault appears only while reversing. The reversing camera feed may not come up at all, or it may come up and then freeze for a moment before clearing. Because the camera hardware itself is intact, the failure is intermittent and easy to mistake for a loose connection, a failing display or a camera on its way out. The one constant is timing: it happens in reverse, exactly when the driver depends on the image to see what is behind the vehicle.

Diagnosis

The root cause is a software defect in the Panoramic View Monitor system, not a broken camera or a wiring fault. The system’s software can enter a logic error, so the reversing image fails to load or freezes. The recall therefore targets the parking assist ECU, the control unit that runs the panoramic view monitor, rather than the camera itself, which is why the remedy is a software update instead of a part replacement.

The recall covers approximately 99,182 vehicles in Canada. Toyota’s filing lists the Camry, Crown, Crown Signia, Grand Highlander, Highlander, Land Cruiser, Prius, RAV4, Sienna, Venza and bZ4X, together with the Lexus ES, GX, LC, LS, LX, NX, RX, RZ and TX. The recall applies only to vehicles equipped with the Panoramic View Monitor, so a car without that system is not involved. Dealers update the software of the Panoramic View Monitor system’s parking assist ECU at no cost, and owners are notified by late December 2025.

Fix

The remedy is a software update to the parking assist ECU. A dealer flashes the updated program for the Panoramic View Monitor system, and the reversing image returns to normal. No camera or control unit hardware is replaced, so the job is short and free to the customer. Owners can check whether their vehicle is affected by entering the VIN on the Toyota or Lexus recall site.

Parts notes

The fix is software, so the recall itself calls for no replacement part. The relevant hardware for a parking assist or camera job outside this recall is the camera control unit and the rear camera. The genuine 86680-60320A0 camera control computer is listed for the Land Cruiser Prado 150 series from 2010 to 2020, and the 86790-33030 rear camera is listed for the Lexus ES240 and ES350. Neither number covers the newer RAV4, Highlander, Camry or Lexus models named in this recall, so confirm the exact number against the chassis code before quoting. The control unit sits in the body electrical module category and the cameras in the cameras category, and both should be checked against the Toyota OE number guide because camera and parking assist parts are keyed tightly to model and generation.

What these cases teach parts buyers

  • A missing or frozen reversing image is often software, not hardware. Before selling a camera or a control unit, check whether the vehicle falls under the Panoramic View Monitor recall and qualifies for a free update.
  • The parking assist ECU is the component the recall actually addresses, so it is the part to map when owners report reversing image faults.
  • Camera and parking assist parts are keyed tightly to model and generation. A Prado camera control computer and a Lexus ES rear camera are not interchangeable with the newer TNGA models.
  • The recall spans a broad model range, so the same symptom can point to several different part numbers depending on the chassis code.
  • A software recall creates no immediate parts demand, but owners who later develop a hard failure in the camera or control unit will be looking for the correct OE number, and confirming it against the genuine Toyota parts guide closes that sale.
