Toyota RAV4 P0776 Transmission Solenoid Valve Replacement

A RAV4 that jerks under throttle with a check-engine light is far more often a valve-body solenoid than a gearbox rebuild. On this ticket a RAV4 (Rong Fang) threw the fault light at motorway speed and started bucking lightly every time the accelerator went down, so the owner left at the next exit and booked the car straight into a Toyota dealer that same afternoon.

The dealer’s scan pulled P0776, the Toyota code for the transmission pressure-control solenoid B, and the deeper test that followed is what turned a frightening dash light into a routine pan-off job. The solenoid’s working current should hold steady inside a 0.3 to 0.5 amp window. On this car the reading swung high and low instead of holding, which the technician logged as internal wear. The same check swept the engine, brake and electrical modules and came back clean, leaving the transmission as the only fault source.

Case 1 – RAV4 pressure-control solenoid, P0776 with a shift jerk

Symptom. The check-engine light came on at motorway speed and the car gave a thud-like jerk under throttle, a small catch the driver felt through the pedal each time it went down. The advisor read P0776 off the scan tool in under two minutes and explained it as the transmission pressure-control solenoid, the component that sets line pressure for clean, predictable shifts. The quote for a pan-off inspection and solenoid replacement came to roughly 1,800 RMB, and the owner signed off on the spot.

Diagnosis. The deeper scan measured the solenoid’s working current against the steady 0.3 to 0.5 amp window it should sit in. The reading wandered instead of holding steady, which is the signature of internal solenoid wear rather than a wiring fault. The same sweep covered the engine, brake and electrical systems and returned nothing, isolating the problem to the transmission alone. With the car raised about 1.6 metres and the undershield removed, the sump came off and the cause hardened into view: the drained fluid was black and carried fine metal particles, and the filter was packed with residue, the sediment that had been pulling the solenoid out of its current window in the first place.

Fix. The old fluid ran out over five or six minutes, the sump and filter residue were cleaned, and the worn solenoid was swapped after a side-by-side comparison against the new part. The pan gasket went on with a bead of sealant, and the bolts were tightened in a diagonal sequence to a uniform 25 N·m before the wiring was clipped back into place. Fresh fluid followed, the final scan came back clean, and the shift data held steady on the re-test before the car was handed back. The bill landed around 1,800 RMB (roughly US$250), most of it the solenoid and the fluid rather than any labour on the gearbox itself.

Parts notes. The parts list for this fix is the solenoid plus the pan-off set that every transmission service should replace together. On the RAV4 the pressure-control and shift solenoids sit under the sump, and two numbers map directly to this job: the SL3 shift solenoid 35210-33030 and the SLT line-pressure solenoid 35290-33040, both listed for the RAV4 ASA4# and ZSA4# chassis covering the 2013 to 2019 cars. The service set that goes with them is the transmission filter 35330-48020 and the pan gasket 35168-28020, refilled with Toyota ATF WS 08886-80200. Confirm the chassis before ordering, because these solenoid numbers do not carry over to the earlier ACA-generation RAV4.

The parts shelf around this job is what keeps a transmission account alive. The solenoid, the filter, the gasket and the fluid move together at every pan-off service, and the workshop that skips one of them is the one whose car comes back with the same P0776 and a blacker sump.

Behind the repair sits a simpler maintenance point the owner took home: the parts that wear should be changed on time rather than stretched. A fluid service that keeps getting put off is exactly what lets the filter load up and drag a solenoid out of its current window, so the service schedule is the cheapest insurance on the transmission.

What this case teaches parts buyers

  1. The solenoid is the repeat sale. A pressure-control solenoid that swings out of its current window is a wear item, not a gearbox failure, so stock the transmission solenoid valve numbers for the RAV4 ASA4# and ZSA4# cars.
  2. The fluid tells the story first. Black fluid with metal particles was the clue that pushed the diagnosis to the solenoid, which is why the transmission filter and the pan gasket move at every service.
  3. Torque spec is part of the sale. A 25 N·m diagonal sequence on the pan bolts is the difference between a sealed sump and a slow weep, so the gasket and the sealant-and-torque step travel together.
  4. Chassis decides the number. The ASA4# and ZSA4# solenoids do not fit the earlier ACA RAV4, so run the OE number check before committing.
  5. One invoice covers the whole pan-off set. Fluid, filter, gasket and solenoid move together, and a workshop that skips one comes back with the same dash light. That is why sourcing genuine parts and knowing how to spot a genuine solenoid from a copy keeps that account coming back.
